Procrastination…

I have a few impending uni assignments coming up, so instead of getting those done, here comes a ramble about what music’s been playing in my ears lately.

Vampire Weekend - these guys are great! I don’t know how to describe them and don’t know much about them but they are really great and just what I’m looking to add into my iPod’s summer playlist. They’ve been named Hot New Kids by Rolling Stone and are being hyped up all over the place. I kept hearing their name and so decided to check out their tracks on MySpace - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa is awesome! I have a feeling I’ll be grabbing a copy of their album and spinning their tunes over the summer. Catchy, feel-good and definitely what I’m in the mood for.

Not so cheery is Soko, whose track I’ll Kill Her has also been getting a few spins. It’s bitter, raw and catchy. And she gets five extra points for being French.

The Bumblebeez: Aussie band that is good. Very good. Signed to Modular and described as a rap/rockabilly/jam band on their MySpace, these fellas get my booty shaking all over the place. I’ve been listening to their new record (thanks Ruella!) and it’s pretty ace.

And Fun Punch by Bagraiders kills me everytime.

OK I should get back to my lovely assignments now.

Angus & Julia Stone (again)

Thanks to a friend of mine, I was lucky enough to score a ticket to Angus & Julia Stone’s concert at the Basement on Monday night that I had mentioned in a previous post. Brilliant! Too bad I didn’t have my SLR on me though…I only had my little ixus on me so my photos are a bit more blurry than usual.

It was also the first time I’d seen a gig at the Basement and I was really impressed with the venue. It was great being able to kick back, have a glass of wine and really listen to the music in such a great space. Plus I couldn’t have asked to listen to a better band for my first time there. I got to have a quick chat to them after the gig and I have to say they are just as lovely as their music is. These Stone kids are going far!

Click below to watch a video clip of one of their older songs, Mango Tree.

Cat Empire: So Many Nights

Last night was night #4 of the Cat Empire’s record-breaking So Many Nights tour at the Metro Theatre. It had been a while since I’d seen them live, so I was looking forward to checking them out again. As always with the Cat Empire, I was guaranteed to get my dancing shoes on as well as have a good night out.

Yesterday was also Fan Night, which meant that anyone tech-savvy enough to get on the Internet could vote for their ideal set-list. My friends and I were pleased with this because it meant we would be treated to a lot of their older songs which I like a lot more than their newer stuff. I particularly enjoyed hearing the now very well-known and crowd-pleasing version of The Chariot featuring a French speaking rendition of Hotel California.

Fan Night also meant everyone was given a free gift for attending. Maybe I’m easily pleased, but I was stoked to get a freebie that didn’t come in the form of a stubby holder. I will definitely be packing that sleeping mask on my next long trip away. I love gimmicks and I love freebies, so even though I didn’t feel like the night was anything near the energy and enjoyment I experienced first seeing them live a few years ago, I still walked away a pretty happy punter.

The White Stripes vs Lomo

Lomo really is taking over the world! I just read that the White Stripes are hawking special edition Jack & Meg Holga/Diana cameras. Of course, they’re red, black and white - and as with all things lomo come in some very spiffy packaging.

I dig my Holga and I love the White Stripes but I have to say I didn’t see this partnership coming. Weird.
